Biography and Wartime Service
James Albion Dunlap was born on March 3, 1919 in Harvard, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bates College in 1940 and earned a Master's in Mathematics at the University of Michigan. James Dunlap entered the service on 26 January 1942 (#31041476). In May of that same year he went to OCS and after graduating as a 2nd Lt he stayed at the school as a math instructor for the next year and a half. As a 1st Lt he was then assigned to the 136th AAA Gun Bn as the assistance intelligence officer. Later he served for a while with A Battery as Range and Excecutive Officer before transferring to C Battery on 6 December 1944 to become their Executive Officer. He left the Army as a Captain in 1945 after four years of service. After the war he returned home to Harvard where he lived for the remainder of his life. He married Grace Dudley and they had two kids together, Beverly and Robert. After the passing of his first wife he remarried Nancy Donaldson. James Dunlap passed on 23 September 2017, age 98.
I had the pleasure of meeting with his daughter Beverly 'Bev' Dunlap Rodrigues and his son Robert Dunlap in November 2024 to attend the ceremony & event commemorating the 80th anniversary of Antwerp X in Putte, Belgium.
Below are several items from the estate of Lt. Dunlap including two overseas caps, several collar insignia & two dog tags. One of the dog tags is his early issue tag showing the enlisted man serial number. After completing OCS James Dunlap was discharged as an Enlisted Men and upon receiving his comission assigned a new officers serial number. These items were donated to my collection by his daughter Beverly after her visit to Putte.
